Sask. specialized institute seeks an ‘auntie-in-residence’ for entrepreneur method

The Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Systems (SIIT) has produced an “auntie-in-residence” place to support mentor Indigenous learners who want to operate their personal businesses.

“We have a sturdy emphasis on local community and kinship amongst our students and so by obtaining this auntie-in-home, it really is just one of our approaches to nurture our pupils,” stated Samantha Ouellette, co-ordinator of Strategic Initiatives, Academics at SIIT.

SIIT, which has three campuses in Saskatchewan, is launching its Miyoskamin: Innovation and Entrepreneurship program, developed to help Indigenous learners become smaller business enterprise owners, in February.

The auntie-in-home will work with the program’s cohort of 15 students and will be related to elder-in-residence positions at publish-secondary institutions that generally give cultural, emotional, and spiritual support for Indigenous pupils.

“Our aunties are like our 2nd dad and mom. They bring that ease and comfort but they are also stern,” reported Ouellette.

Mary Beaucage, who labored as an elder-in-home at the University of Saskatchewan, stated assist roles are crucial for Indigenous students in write-up-secondary institutions. 

“I imagine aunties give that secure room — it won’t make a difference what you connect with it, irrespective of whether you connect with it an elder or an auntie — it’s a safe room in which learners can arrive,” reported Beaucage, who is Métis from Vassar, Gentleman.

“Aunties are safe. Kokums are protected.”

Ouellette, who is Cree from Meadow Lake Saskatchewan, has a bachelor of education and learning diploma and is receiving near to finishing a master’s in training from the College of Saskatchewan. She said having an educational auntie would have designed a difference even though she was completing her 1st diploma.

“You never often get that at post-secondary institutes or academic institutes at all, and so even inside of this software, we have our Indigenous knowledge programs embedded within just the curriculum,” stated Ouellette.
