Bicycles and trails

A recreation hallmark in DeLand was the completion of a 4-mile stretch of a 4-foot-extensive clay route connecting DeLand to Lake Beresford that was the city’s to start with-ever prepared bicycle trail.

This achievement very likely was introduced about by means of the attempts of the newly shaped DeLand chapter of the “League of American Wheelmen” (a forerunner of today’s “League of American Bicyclists”).

1 of this group’s major missions was to foyer for strengthening the crude trails as a result of the woods that cyclists experienced to forge for themselves.

The new smooth-surfaced bicycle route bought heavy use even in the area’s warm climate.

It was cleverly developed to guide instantly to a site on the lake wherever cyclists could refresh on their own with h2o from a cool spring that, in contrast to the drinking water stored in family cisterns, did not have to have the “wigglers” strained out of it right before it could be drunk.
