On most afternoons Madison Park resident Sandy Chock-Eng can be found at the moorage docks in Leschi or paddling on Lake Washington with other members of the Seattle SAKE Paddling Club.

According to its site, the club’s mission is to “promote physical, mental and emotional advantages of the paddle sports activities to the group.”

The club gives stand-up paddleboarding and also has two outrigger canoes for member use. The most significant action with the most participants, like Chock-Eng, having said that, are the dragon boat paddlers.

She mentioned, whilst Seattle doesn’t have the similar dragon boat lifestyle of other metropolitan areas, such as Portland, Oregon, or San Francisco, it is escalating in popularity. Club member and dragon boat racer Pat Halloran, who like Chock-Eng is retired, reported she was recruited by a lady in her 80s.

“I came on a hot day for a day of fun and finished up aggressive paddling,” Halloran said. “I appreciate it, the camaraderie, for one thing. I just unquestionably appreciate it.”

Chock-Eng reported she joined for the physical exercise and stayed for the enjoyable and companionship.

“The other factor I adore about it is the actual physical action retains my endorphins functioning,” she mentioned.

Chock-Eng explained individuals who be part of the paddling club take care of every other like relatives.  When her son died tragically, the dragon boaters gathered for a distinctive ceremony and put flowers in Lake Washington in honor of Chock-Eng’s son.
