As the COVID-19 omicron variant surges, so do Gainesville residents’ worries about UF learners returning for the Spring semester.

Omicron instances in Florida started to increase mid-December, and infections have rapidly improved given that then. From Dec. 10 to Dec. 16, 29,514 new circumstances have been documented in the Florida Department of Wellness COVID-19 Weekly Circumstance Report. From Dec. 31 to Jan. 6, 397,114 new circumstances were documented.

In Alachua County by yourself, 3,789 new scenarios have been documented the 7 days of Jan. 7, adding up to 47,057 cumulative whole conditions in the county, according to the Alachua County COVID-19 Dashboard

UF anticipated Alachua County scenarios to rise all over January as college students journey to Gainesville and expanded screening capacity, according to its Dec. 31 campus temporary

“This spike is predicted to be rather limited in duration — probably no a lot more than two to four months,” it said in the quick.

Alachua County is using precautionary measures to manage the spread of the virus as students return.

Whilst there is no mask mandate for people, county workforce operating indoors and men and women attending board conferences are needed to use masks, reported Mark Sexton, the county Communications and Legislative Affairs Director.

The county is also building motives for workers and residents who have been hesitant to get vaccinated.

“We’re supplying a $250 incentive for staff to get their booster pictures, and we’re going back to a $100 incentive for any individual who is obtaining their initially or second shot,” said Sexton. “We’re receiving ready to reinstate a vaccine incentive for citizens, as perfectly, to stimulate them to carry our vaccine amount up.”

UF learners, who are regarded as Gainesville citizens, will be suitable for this incentive, he explained.

On the other hand, these steps present minimal solace to Gainesville locals.
