‘It triggers trauma’: School leaders, dad and mom involved for kids’ psychological health with current threats

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – “I would’ve under no circumstances imagined I was speaking to my daughter about if a gentleman comes in with a gun what to do.”

Jacqueline Pidanik, a Beaufort County University District father or mother, describes the discussion she experienced with her 8-year-outdated about threats of gun violence at local educational institutions.

“I actually had to convey to her mainly because she would pick up bits and pieces of items being stated, you’re not gonna die, you’re not gonna get wounded, you’re gonna be Okay mainly because she would really examine it,” Pidanik explained.

In the last two weeks, News 3 has noted on seven universities in the space obtaining threats. Moms and dads say it’s a heartbreaking and frightening pattern.

On Friday, districts nationwide had been monitoring an obvious TikTok trend threatening school violence. Locally, university districts did not report any incidents related to the rumors.

As a father or mother, Pidanik said there is always a feeling of stress above if her kids’ university will be the subsequent vicitm.

A further mother or father, who requested not to be named, has held her young ones home numerous occasions this year in worry of a risk.

“They’re worn out of it. It results in trauma and it results in anxiousness issues with these young children,” the mother explained. “This continuous anxiety of ‘what if?’ with these faculty shootings is uncalled for.”

Dr. Quentina Miller-Fields, the director of scholar affairs for SCCPSS, stated threats of college violence are regarding and have an psychological impression on pupils and staff.

“They’re worried. They’re fearful. They are not positive no matter if they are pranks or serious,” Miller-Fields explained.

Miller-Fields stated it’s important for mom and dad to routinely verify in with their little ones – and encourages students to speak out.
