Expand journey to Cuba to encourage reform from inside

Colorado has distinct connections to Cuba that make the status of U.S-Cuban relations and the recent repression of tranquil protests on the island of significant relevance to our state.  Colorado organizations have longstanding interest in trade alternatives with Cuba and Quite a few delegations of Coloradans pay a visit to the island every yr and have interaction in cultural and humanitarian exchanges.

When Fidel Castro marched victoriously on the historic metropolis of Santiago in January 1959, he spoke of a revolution “characterized exactly by its newness, by the truth that it will do matters that have in no way been carried out before.” As Ada Ferrer recounts in her exquisitely published book, Cuba, An American Heritage, this statement was intended to mean that the Revolution would not be like the ones that preceded it in Cuba.

The Revolution did differentiate by itself from the previous by virtue of its longevity (spanning now around six decades), expropriation of personal belongings, and an anemic state-controlled economic climate. And, sadly, it also proved far more effective than prior regimes in entrenching one-human being rule and suppression of dissent, which includes the imprisoning, exiling and killing of charismatic voices of opposition.  

This intolerance for dissent has attracted renewed interest with the government’s response previous July and November to the protests of artists and some others contacting for reform.
