David Seymour: Magnum founder and human rights photographer

“Chim was inspired by his perception that young children had been usually the best victims of wars,” notes Carole Naggar, David Seymour’s biographer. Seymour, whom all people termed Chim, was one of the founders of the world-renowned Magnum images company.

Seymour remaining Poland as a Jew in 1932 and returned from the US in 1948 to photograph small children and youthful persons in devastated submit-Environment War II Europe. His photos introduced them into target as victims of war and conflict.

As early as the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), Seymour took famed images of the Republican troops preventing towards fascist dictator Francisco Franco. As a socialist, he took sides with the Republican troops in his photos and photographed the suffering civilian populace. It was a novelty.

At the time, Seymour even now bore his Polish name Dawid Szymin.

A 10 years later, when Chim accepted the newly launched UNICEF’s fee to just take pictures for the Youngsters of Europe picture task in 1948, he experienced very long grow to be a prosperous photojournalist. With sensitivity and profound empathy, Chim photographed small children in Greece, Italy, Austria, Poland and Hungary in the summertime of 1948.

The photographer, who acquired US citizenship in 1942, was identified from then on as David Robert Seymour.
