CHAUTAUQUA, N.Y. (AP) — Salman Rushdie, the writer whose producing led to death threats from Iran in the 1980s, was attacked and apparently stabbed in the neck Friday by a guy who rushed the stage as he was about to give a lecture in western New York.

A bloodied Rushdie, 75, was flown to a hospital. His problem was not promptly acknowledged. His agent, Andrew Wylie, reported the author was going through operation, but he had no other details.

An Affiliated Push reporter witnessed a person confront Rushdie on stage at the Chautauqua Establishment and punch or stab him 10 to 15 occasions as he was staying released. The author was pushed or fell to the ground, and the gentleman was arrested.

Authorities did not instantly detect the attacker or offer any details on his motive.
