Archiving the lives of the faceless qawwals

At the Sufi Kathak Foundation’s Qawwali Image Job, a single is greeted by evocative photos of qawwals undertaking at several shrines throughout the state. From the Nizami Brothers at the Hazrat Nizamuddin in Delhi, Qawwal Ustad Ranjhan Ali at Dargah Hazrat Bannay Shah in Amritsar, to Qawwal Sarvjeet Tamta at the Shaheen Bagh protest — these photos doc the lives of the ‘faceless’ practitioners of this 700-calendar year-old artform.

Curated by the founder of Sufi Kathak Basis, Manjari Chaturvedi, the exhibition makes an attempt to underscore the value of remembering these artists who have been mainly forgotten. “Had it not been for famous qawwals these kinds of as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Bollywood films and Coke Studio, the artform may well have gone mostly unrecognised,” says Chaturvedi. “This is mainly because qawwali is regarded to be a relaxed artform. Even even though it is common, nobody is aware what qawwalis are, who are qawwals, what they sing about there were no academics related to it. There is only a single guide on qawwali written by Regula Qureshi,” she provides.

It is a very first-of-its-variety effort to document the qawwals’ intoxicating performances, their life and association with the Sufi shrines in which they execute. Chaturvedi has been performing with qawwals for 25 yrs and documenting their life considering that then. “While documenting their individual background, they would point out their grandfathers who were being also good qawwals. When I would talk to them for a photograph, they would deliver a minor passport-size photograph employed in ration playing cards. I would believe that a legend of a guy is neglected due to the fact he wasn’t documented. I realised we are not even documenting the qawwals of currently. Then we started out the Qawwali Photo Job to document qawwals,” mentioned Chaturvedi.
